Master of Public Health Program Rankings

A Master of Public Health, or MPH program is a degree that individuals seek out if they’re interested in the study of disease in the broader context of social organizations. There are many fields that public health programs draw from including, but not limited to:

  • Chemistry
  • Psychology
  • Mathematics
  • Nursing
  • Infectious Disease
  • Pediatrics
  • Obstetrics
  • Environmental Medicine

The Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH) explains that there are two different categories for public health degrees: schools of public health and public health programs.

Public health schools offer more concentrations or specializations in public health. On the other hand, programs are only required to offer a single MPH degree and are therefore typically smaller. Additionally there are separate accreditation standards for each.

Accreditation for MPH Programs

Accreditation is important. If you want a degree that will get you a desired public health job then it’s good to make sure your program is accredited. A good, accredited MPH program will have been thoroughly researched. They typically exhibit exceptionally high quality, academic rigor, and good value.

Sometimes fellowships are only offered to students who attend accredited programs. Also, The National Board of Public Health Examiners offers their exam only to graduates of accredited programs and schools.

Through the CEPH you can see what programs are accredited based on different criteria. CEPH is the only organization recognized by the US Department of Education to accredit public health schools and programs. It’s important to understand the difference between CEPH accreditation and regional accreditation.

Regional accreditation covers the university as a whole, whereas CEPH accreditation (known was “specialized accreditation”) specifically covers the public health program. With CEPH accreditation your MPH program will focus on the training in a particular field or profession, such as nursing, education, medicine, physical therapy or more.

MPH Program Curriculum

A highly ranked MPH program will require at least two to three years of graduate study in order to earn the minimum entry-level qualification. According to CEPH standards, all MPH degrees need no fewer than 42 semester credits of coursework.

The most important part about MPH program curriculum is to find a program that addresses your education and career goals. In order to do this you should contact programs directly to find out what their program is about, and if they have an accredited fast track option available.

Most accredited MPH programs offer the following as their core curriculum:

  • Biostatistics
  • Environmental Health
  • Management Sciences
  • Policy/Problem Solving
  • Public Health Biology
  • Social and Behavioral Sciences
